Sun 5 April. Death of Bill Halsey of Birmingham, aged 80 (born 9 December 1934).

Jack Quinn

Bill Halsey

William Halsey burst on to the Warwickshire draughts scene in 1967 and won the Birmingham Cup in his first year of serious play. He suffered a severe setback in October 1968 when he only just survived a serious car crash. He never recovered full health and amazed everyone by reaching the age of 80. He was one of the area's strongest post-war players, winning the league 8 times, the Warwickshire Cup 7 times and the Birmingham Cup twice. He was West Midlands Match Champion in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1990 and 1993. In 1987 he became the English Amateur Champion. He was also a regular for Warwickshire county team. He retired through ill health in 1995.

Sun 17 July. Death of Clive Lewis Doleman of Droitwich, aged 76 (born 1 May 1940).

Clive Doleman

Clive Doleman

l'm sorry to announce the passing of Clive Doleman, one of our draughts players from the Midlands. I first met Clive some 20 years ago, and found him to be a very strong player in our draughts league. Clive won the West Midlands League in 1982, 1984 and 1994. Bill Halsey was around then and thought very highly of him as a player. Clive was a steady player but very strong in his day. He dropped out of the game for a while, but l managed to persuade him back. He wasn't quite at the same strength as he used to be, but he was still an excellent player. I often went to Clive's house in Droitwich to play draughts, and in the early days nearly always got beaten. As well as winning the league, Clive won the Warwickshire Cup in 2013, and the Birmingham Cup in 1983, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2012. l improved in time (20 years) and beat Clive more often than he beat me, but he was always a hard man to beat.

Sadly, Clive's failing health to the cancer he suffered meant he couldn't play his league fixtures, though he did try. Clive played regularly in our league and county matches, but didn't normally go to tournaments outside the Midlands. l'm told that 2 days before he died Clive was playing draughts on line, a testament to his love of the game. He was well supported by draughts players at his funeral. He was a very likeable player. He loved gardening, holidays and photography. Also his family was always a priority for him.

He will be missed as a true gentleman on the board and off it, and as an excellent player and personal friend. Our sympathy goes to his wife Jill, and the rest of the family.

Tony Boyle, 18 August 2016.
