2001

6th Feb. Death of F.L. Tatler.

Fred Tatler

"Fred Tatler died on Feb 6th, 2001, at the age of 74. Fred was a real Black Country character from Stourbridge and was well known nationally as a draughts enthusiast. In 1973 he was made a life member of the EDA in recognition of the "time and devotion to organising so many correspondence tourneys". He was EDA Postal League Secretary from 1966 to 1976. In 1970 he founded the Worcester and Staffordshire DA, which several of our players joined. Fred was also a county chess player and medal-winning ballroom dancer."

[Obituary by Ken Lovell in West Midlands Draughts News, No 24, Jan 2002]

28th April. Death of Denis Nyland.

Denis Nyland

"Denis Nyland of Birmingham died on April 28th, 2001, aged 73. He first joined the Warwickshire DA in the 1960s, and although he was one of our strongest players he actually won only a few competitions - the Birmingham Cup in 1974 and the Warwickshire Cup in 1990. The league title eluded him, though he was runner-up on 7 occasions. He produced a fine performance for England B in the 2000 Home internationals."

[Obituary by Ken Lovell in West Midlands Draughts News, No 24, Jan 2002]

16 March. Ted Corey , Birmingham, died aged 75.

Ted Corey

"E.C. Corey of Birmingham died on 16th March aged 75. Ted joined the Warwickshire D.A. in the early 1960s and was an enthusiastic player. He played regularly for many years and was a reliable member of the county team, but retired from the game a few years ago. Surprisingly he did not win many trophies, but did win the Birmingham Championship in 1972 and the third Sammy Cohen Tournament in 1975."

17 Jan. Death of David Dunn, aged 86 (born 3 Oct 1918).

David Dunn

"We have lost another of our old stalwarts in David Dunn of Old Hill. David had been ill in hospital for several months and was visited daily by his wife Elsie. He was a strong player, and played for many years in club and county matches until forced to retire through ill health a few years ago. He won the West Midlands League in 1986 and 1997, and the Warwickshire Cup in 1996. Elsie has kindly donated a replacement Birmingham Cup in his memory."
