Sat 19 Jan. Last recorded games at Brooks' Vaults, Jamaica Row, Birmingham. The pub was due to close. It had been a popular Saturday night venue for draughts players, though situated in an unsalubrious area behind the Birmingham wholesale fruit and veg. markets. Anything could happen - noisy wedding parties; policemen patrolling in pairs; people taken away by men in white coats; a very old lady going round shaking her collection box for an unspecified charity; and a squawking parrot - while the draughts players carried on regardless, even on the night when the ceiling fell down.

14 March. Death of Harold W. Elkington, of Budbrooke, Warwick, aged 88. A popular figure, well-known to players throughout the British Isles owing to his many tournament appearances, though his habit of snuff-taking was less endearing. His talents lay more in organisation than playing. He was the founder of the Warwickshire county association in 1947 and was untiring in his efforts to keep it going. At the time of his death he was President of the EDA and of Warwickshire DA, also a Vice-president of Worcs and Staffs DA.
