Easter, 26-30 March. English Championship at Bristol. "Championship Pen-pictures" [in the International Draughts Mail Player magazine] on these players:
H.P. Holloway (Birmingham), For the 7th time he reached the semi-final stage of the English Championship. Played in the last England v Scotland match. Four time champion of Warwickshire and for thirty years champion of Birmingham [incorrect]
C.W. Osborne (Warwick) Played in all the big tourneys since the war with good results. Has been in the game for 65 years and now captains the county side.
C.H. Ford (Birmingham). Finalist in the British Correspondence Championship for 1950. Has entered all major tournaments since the war.
H. Cleaver (Warwick) Runner-up for the Kenilworth Cup on three occasions. A county player.
H. W. Elkington and W.D. Harvey were spectators.

Sat 19 May. F. F. Smith died aged 78. He was born in Birmingham on 25 Oct. 1872. He joined the Birmingham Club in about 1892, when C.H. Edwards was Midlands champion. He later became draughts editor of the Birmingham News for 8 or 9 years until the column was discontinued. Published books, notably on the Edinburgh opening. A correspondence expert, but also played in several English championships. He won the world postal championship when only John Napier accepted his open challenge. (13-0 and 3 draws, from 1933-36). Collected anything on the game. Left his extensive library to the British Museum. He'd retired to Paignton.

Feb? Death of John Alexander, a Scotsman by birth who had settled in Birmingham about the turn of the century. He was a draughts historian and expert player. He was co-author of Kear's Encyclopaedia and wrote several articles for the American Checker Monthly in the 1930s. He conducted the draughts column in The Birmingham Weekly Post from 1905 to 1916. Played in the English tourneys: 1902/4/6/8/9, winning the English Championship in 1906. Scottish tourneys: 1904/6/7. Played for England vs Scotland 1903/27 and for Great Britain vs USA in 1927.

The Kenilworth Cup was thrown open to all Midland players - won by Ted Ransome (Nottingham); in the final he beat C.H. Ford by 1-0, 3 draws.

Sat 4 July. Simultaneous match (promotional) in Pump Room Gardens, Leamington Spa. C. W. Osborne beat W. H. Cooper by 4-3 and 5 draws. The match lasted 2½ hours.

Sat 15 Aug in Pump Room Gardens, Leamington Spa. C. W. Osborne played 15 opponents simultaneously, winning 12 games and drawing 3.

Telephone match

Sat 5 Sept. A telephone match between teams at the Pier Head Bandstand, Southend, and the Pump Room, Leamington Spa. Over 1000 visitors at Southend followed the play on demo boards, plus the biggest audience ever seen in Warwickshire. Essex beat Warwickshire by 3-0 and 1 draw.

June. Cooper, Elkington and C.W. Osborne played in the British championship at Whitley Bay.

Sat 17 July. Opening of a giant board by the council in the Pump Room Gardens, Leamington. It was the first giant draughts board in Warwickshire. Later an exhibition of simultaneous play versus 15 opponents was given by E.W. Ransome of Nottingham.

Sun 25 July. Death of Samuel J. Pickering of Willenhall, Staffs. (born 11 May 1878). He was a famous problem composer, being a locksmith by trade and, according to the BDJ, "the soul of urbanity...and a lover of his fellow-men."

Warwickshire DA Free Handicap. A.E. Beck beat Edwin Camillis in the final.

Fri 20 April. H.P. Holloway died, aged 86. Undoubtedly one of the region's greatest players. By 1910 he had been regarded locally as inferior only to Ward, Alexander and Hudson. He reached the English Championship semi-final 5 times and was a 1948 internationalist. He won the Birmingham Championship and Warwickshire Cup many times.
