A CHRONOLOGY OF DRAUGHTS IN THE WEST MIDLANDS OF ENGLAND

1941

Fri 24 May. Charles Henry Edwards died. He was a former Birmingham champion who had settled in Melbourne in 1910.

1945

Feb. Kenilworth Chess and Draughts Club was formed.

1946

18 April. W.H. Waller died at Paignton.

April. English Championship at Torquay. C.W. Osborne, J. Hemming, H. P. Holloway and W. D. Harvey played.

Chess and checkers match, GB v USA. D. Stickland, W.D. Harvey and A.E. Beck played.

1947

Sat 11 Jan. A meeting was held at YMCA, Dale End, Birmingham, with Mr. Osborne in the chair . Its purpose was to consider the formation of a county association, to be called the Birmingham and District Draughts Association, "embracing South Staffordshire, East Worcestershire and the whole of Warwick County".
Officers elected: Secretary/treasurer - Harold Elkington; President - W.D. Harvey; Vice-chairman - Mr. Osborne. H. P. Holloway, A. Ensor and W.H. Cole were elected as Birmingham's reps on a committee of 5. Also present: Pearson, C. H. Ford and others ?
Annual Subs 2/6. Correspondence tourney to start (10 entries).

Tue 21 Jan. Meeting in Kenilworth.
Present: H. W. Elkington, C.W. Osborne, S.C. Osborne, R. Farquhar, A. E. Beck, G. Osborne.
A majority were against the title but would join. Cleaver and R. Farquhar were elected as Kenilworth reps on the committee. A suggestion for a county crossboard championship would be put to the association.

Sat 1 March. Kenilworth beat Coventry by 5-3, 0 draws.

Dec. W. Bailey of Wolverhampton won the Staffordshire Championship. It was decided to form an association. Secretary: K. Dunning, Walsall.

There were 24 members in the first year of the Birmingham and District Association.

1948

Sat 17 Jan. Birmingham and District D.A. AGM at YMCA. Chair: W.D. Harvey.
It was reported that 5 matches had been played, a correspondence tourney started, a Warwickshire Championship played, plus a problem competition. Five members had played in the national championship.
A Birmingham and District Championship is to be held - knockout, 4 games, 2-move openings.
A change of name was discussed but the vote was in favour of remaining the same.
Officers all re-elected: President - W. D. Harvey; Vice-president - C. W. Osborne; Secretary/treasurer. - H. W. Elkington; Auditor - H. P. Holloway. Committee - Cole, C. H. Ford, R. Farquhar, Cleaver and Jones. Also present: Ensor, A.W. Dunn, W. H. Cooper, Farmer, and others ?

Semi-final. H.P. Holloway beat M. Cleaver by 3-0; C. W. Osborne beat W. Jones by 2-1, 1 draw.
Final: H. Holloway beat C. W. Osborne by 2-0 and 1 draw.

Easter. English championship at Bolton. H. P. Holloway reached the semi-finals. [Holloway v Oldbury games in New Draughts World; Games 1043 to 1045.] W. Cleaver, C.W. Osborne and C.H. Ford played.

April. Staffordshire lost to Sheffield by 18-22 and 1 draw.

Sat 19 June. Committee meeting in Kenilworth. Present: W. D. Harvey, C. W. Osborne, R. Farquhar, Cole, C. H. Ford, Cleaver, A. E. Beck, A. Ensor, H. P. Holloway, S.C. Osborne and H. W. Elkington. Members were to be balloted on change of name to Warwickshire Draughts Association. A 3-move championship was proposed.

Present: C.W. Osborne, Cleaver, R. Farquhar, A.E. Beck, W. Cole, A. Ensor, C.H. Ford, H.P. Holloway, Pearson, W.H. Cooper, J. Farmer, J. Bateson, R.T. Ward, S. Silverman and H.W. Elkington.
The name of the association was changed to Warwickshire D.A.
It was reported that there had been a 2-move and 3-move championship, a minor championship, a match vs Staffordshire, a Birmingham vs Kenilworth match and a postal match vs Manchester; also 3 problem competitions had been set.
4 members had played in the English Championship and Holloway in the international at Paisley.
There was a special mention for Harry Holloway, who won both Warwickshire championships (2-move and 3-move), was 3rd equal in the English championship, and had a score of 2-0-9 draws playing for England vs Scotland.
A team would be entered in the counties championship run by the EDA.

March. The famous Chad Valley Co. Ltd of Birmingham agreed to manufacture red and white draughtsmen, with green and buff boards, after consultation with the EDA.
